KT WIZ defeated the Kiwoom Heroes in a thrilling 12-inning extra innings to boost its chances of advancing to the fall baseball season.

KT won a thrilling 8-7 victory over the Kiwoom Heroes in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League on Sunday at Katie Wiz Park in Suwon, South Korea, thanks to Jang Sung-woo's game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th inning of extra innings.

With the win, KT, with 71 wins, 70 losses, two ties and a .504 winning percentage, moved into sole possession of fifth place, half a game ahead of the SSG Landers (70 wins, 70 losses, two ties and a .500 winning percentage), who had the day off.

However, KT's postseason hopes are far from assured.

In the top of the fifth, Kim Tae-jin tripled down the right field line and came home on Lee Joo-hyung's infield grounder to tie the game at 5-5.

With momentum on their side, Kiwoom scored two runs in the top of the eighth on a double by Kim Hye-sung and an RBI single by Jang Jae-young to take a 7-5 lead.

In the 12th inning, when the score remained tied, Jang Sung-woo came to the rescue again.

With one out in the bottom of the 12th, Jung Jun-young was hit by a pitch and Mel Rojas Jr. singled up the middle to put runners on first and third.

Lotte scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and NC answered with one run in the top of the third and fourth innings.

However, Lotte scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including a three-run home run by Go Seung-min, to take a 7-2 lead.

Lotte added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including a two-run double by Park Seung-wook and an RBI single by Hwang Sung-bin.

Go Seung-min led the offense, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs.

LOTTE starter Han Hyun-hee earned his fifth win in five starts, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings.

With his 1-for-4 performance, LOTTE foreign-born hitter Victor Reyes now has 199 hits on the season, tying him with Jose Fernandez (then of the Doosan Bears) for second on the all-time single-season hits list.

The KBO's all-time leader in a single season is Seo Gun-chang (now with the KIA Tigers), who had 201 hits in 2014.

Reyes still has two games left to break the record.

In Daejeon, the Hanwha Eagles swept the KIA Tigers 8-0.

Hanwha opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with runners on first and third on an infield single by Chae Eun-sung and then scored on a bases-loaded walk by Lee Do-yoon to take a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Choi In-ho doubled and Noh Si-hwan singled to make it 3-0.

In the seventh, Hanwha scored two runs on an error and added three more in the bottom of the eighth, including a two-run homer by Choi In-ho.

Kia's Kim Do-young, who has 38 home runs and 40 stolen bases, batted leadoff and went 0-for-4.

Hanwha starter Ryan Weiss pitched six innings of three-hit ball with six strikeouts to earn the win.
